Oral hygiene is vital for your oral health. However, it must be an effective oral hygiene routine. This means you need to do more than just brush twice a day. In fact, you need to remember to also floss and rinse once a day. To help you have the proper flossing technique, Dr. Dawn A. Wu is happy to give you flossing instructions.

First, take about 18 inches of floss out of the dispenser. Then, wind the floss evenly around the middle finger on each hand. Leave about one inch of floss between each finger. Finally, use your index fingers to send that section of floss between your teeth.

When flossing, gently put the floss between two teeth—be careful not to injure the gums. Next, rub the floss against the sides of the teeth. Try to remove as much plaque as possible. Then, send the floss into the gumline. Remember: be careful. Rub the floss against the roots of each tooth to clean along the gums.

Make sure you do these things between each tooth. Also, remember to use a new section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth. When you’re done, rinse your mouth with water.
