Our dentist helps to protect your mouth from oral cancer by performing an oral biopsy. If our dentist and team find suspicious areas in your mouth, then we may remove a small amount of tissue and send it in for testing. Contact our New Smile Dentistry team to learn more about receiving an oral biopsy in Richardson, Texas.
We perform an oral biopsy if patients have sores, lesions, or patches in the mouth that we cannot diagnose with a visual exam or X-rays. These lesions could be a sign of oral cancer, so we will send them to a pathologist who can determine their nature. You may want to visit our practice for a biopsy or an oral cancer exam if you experience one of more of the following:
- Oral sores or lesions that do not heal naturally within two weeks
- White or red patches in your mouth
- A sore throat that is not caused by a cold or related problem
- Difficulty swallowing or chewing
- Numbness in your mouth
We will carefully remove the lesion or a portion of it to send to a pathologist for analysis. After the pathologist exams the tissue sample and performs the necessary tests, they will send us the results so we can tell you about the cause of the oral lesion.
