The word Periodontal literally means “around the tooth.” It’s a medical term that applies to the gums and bone that support the teeth. Periodontal disease occurs when the bacteria in plaque that has formed on the teeth inflames the gums. Gingivitis is the mildest and most treatable form of periodontal disease. People with gingivitis usually experience red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Fortunately, with professional care and good oral hygiene practices, gingivitis is reversible.
Periodontitis is the next stage of periodontal disease. It occurs when the plaque on teeth spreads beneath the gum line, carrying bacteria to the bone and ligament that supports the teeth. The resulting inflammation can lead to the loosening and eventual loss of teeth.
