Brace yourself for a beautiful smile!
What you need to know about Orthodontics (braces) for children and adults
While orthodontics (braces) is most commonly associated with children, more adults are opting for them than ever before. With low profile styling, improved materials and fixed and removable options, today’s braces can solve a wide range of dental problems for children and adults of all ages, ranging from severe underbite or overbite issues and jaw-joint disorders to minor straightening of the teeth for a fuller, more beautiful smile in less time—in some cases, just a few months.
Dr. Dawn Wu’s expertise and years of experience with fitting braces for patients of all ages assures you and your family of the best in orthodontic care.
Who needs braces?
The answer isn’t always obvious. While many children won’t need braces, EVERY child should be evaluated by the time his/her permanent teeth start to come in, usually around age 7. Orthodontic treatment is usually recommended for problems that become evident while permanent teeth are still emerging and the jaw is growing, a process that is ongoing from approximately age 6 to 12. In most cases, the earlier a problem is caught, the easier it is to correct.
While adult treatment with braces may take a little longer than a child’s, braces can still effectively correct a variety of dental problems, including crooked or crowded teeth and incorrect jaw position.
How is a person evaluated for braces?
Dr. Wu normally uses in-office photos, x-rays impressions of the teeth and an examination of the mouth to determine what is necessary and most beneficial for each person.
What will braces look like?
Today’s braces come in a variety of materials and colors. They can be constructed of plastic, ceramic, metal or a combination of materials. Some, like Invisalign®, are practically invisible. Dr. Wu can recommend the best braces for your individual situation.
What about eating and drinking with braces?
Children and adults with traditional fixed braces can safely eat most foods, but will have to use caution or even avoid certain ones —especially if they’re hard, crunchy or sticky such as corn on the cob, popcorn and caramels. Those who opt for removable braces such as Invisalign® can pop their braces on and off when they want to eat. Dr. Wu and her staff can provide more guidance and information according to your situation.
