  • Family Dentistry

From baby teeth to braces and crowns to complete dentures, Dr. Wu and the staff at New Smile PA provide quality, compassionate care for every member of the family.

With nearly two decades of experience in general dentistry, orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Wu has successfully treated hundreds of patients and their children. During that time, she has also answered hundreds of questions about dentistry. Here are a few of the most common ones:

“When should my baby have its first dentist visit?”
A baby should have its first dental examination when its first tooth comes in, usually between six months to one year old, but no later than its first birthday. The earlier a child is examined and evaluated, the better the chances of heading off future dental problems.

“My teeth aren’t hurting, so they’re okay, right?”
Most dental problems won’t cause any pain until the condition is advanced. At that point, treatment may not only take much more time, but be much more expensive as well.  For optimum health, everyone should have regular dental checkups, preferably twice a year.

“Why do I have to come in for regular cleanings? I brush my teeth every day.”
Plague is soft, sticky bacteria that builds up on the teeth and can lead to gum disease and other problems. Unfortunately, it is often invisible to the naked eye and is usually not removed by brushing alone.

“I’m missing a tooth, but I can eat just fine. So why should I replace it?”
The loss of even one tooth can lead to a host of problems as the other teeth compensate for the missing one. They can shift in the mouth, causing the entire bite pattern to change. In many cases, losing one tooth will lead to the loss of others.

“What does it matter what I eat, as long as I brush my teeth afterward?”
A good diet—including plenty of fruits and vegetables—enhances the immune system, which is an important component in resisting oral and dental infections and controlling periodontal disease. By contrast, constantly coating the teeth with sugar-filled food and drinks not only reduces overall immunity, it can also jump start tooth decay.
