Denture Facts and FAQ

Dentures are prosthetic devices that replace missing teeth. Depending on the patient and the situation, any one of a number of types of dentures may be necessary, including partial dentures, complete dentures, overdentures, conventional dentures and immediate dentures.

A partial denture normally consists of a few replacement teeth connected to a plastic base that matches the color of the gums. The partial denture is then attached to natural teeth with either metal clasps or devices known as precision attachments.

As the name implies, a complete denture replaces a full set of missing teeth. Complete dentures can be either immediate or conventional. Immediate dentures are inserted as soon as natural teeth are removed, while conventional dentures are fitted either weeks or months after natural teeth have been removed, in order to give mouth tissues more time to heal.

An overdenture fits over the top of a few remaining teeth or implants. Dr. Wu can advise whether or not it is appropriate in your individual case.
